Web Home Page: Barberton Nature Reserve is situated in an area steeped in gold-mining history, and with its neighbour, the 56 000 ha Songimvelo Game Reserve, forms a considerable conservation area. Having only recently been proclaimed, the Barberton reserve is in the early stages of development, but promises to take a leading part in the conservation of the Lowveld environment. This is rugged, hilly country, covered mainly by grassland, but also by areas of open bushveld and riverine forest. A number of human activities, mining in particular, are still practised in the area, and these have had an adverse effect on local mammal populations. However, a variety of smaller species, such as baboon, vervet monkey, rock dassie and common duiker survive. Birdlife is prolific, with more than 300 species recorded. Summers are warm to hot, and winter days are mild to cool, although the nights can be cold, particularly in the mountains. Location: North-eastern Mpumalanga; north-east of Barberton. Access: From Barberton the R38 to Kaapmuiden traverses the reserve. Accommodation: None. There are hotels, self-catering accommodation and a camping site in Barberton. Other facilities: To be developed. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Traversed by public roads.
